Red Bull Sound Select is making it’s way to a city near you and last night we were fortunate to have a set right here in Bushwick. This event was sponsored by the good folks at Red Bull and curated by Brooklyn Vegan. This music event took place at The Shop, a local barbecue, motorcycle-esque juke joint located at 234 Starr Street. Upon entry, the shop’s mantra “Cook slow, ride fast” is plastered largely across the wall. You were then greeted at the door by Red Bull representatives and given a sample of Red Bull to try.

The stage prior to the beginning of the show was a very dreamy blue as a diverse crowd quickly made their way into the building. Everyone flocked to the bar to grab their favorite drink and grab a pulled pork sandwich or a hot dog. Before you knew it, it was 8pm and the show started promptly with the opening act being LOAF Muzik, a collective who are known to  infuse the “GOLDEN ERA” of Hip-Hop with the same energy of Hip-Hop today. As they performed, you could see the chemistry that they have as a group, the energy was absolutely felt.

The next artist to perform was raising rap star, Lil Herb. He was warmly introduced to the stage by Loaf Muzik. The crowd was very receptive to this Chicago native. With his outfit, he kept it very simple but made a statement, dressed in all black with a Louis belt around his waist and a diamond encrusted watch on his wrist. This was his first time performing in Brooklyn, and judging from the sounds of the crowd, it won’t be his last. Lil Herb also mentioned that yesterday was a significant day for him as one of his really great friends lost his life on this day a few years back.

The last act of the night was by Vince Staples, an artist from Long Beach California, dressed in a hoody and a pair of laced up chucks; bringing Cali to Brooklyn. Over crowd surfing and spitting lyrics from his latest album Summertime ’06, the Brooklyn audience ate it all up. Many times he stopped rapping and allowed the collaborative efforts of the audience to finish his verses.

All in all, it was a great turnout and it’s safe to say that Brooklyn loves and gained a little more respect for Chi-town and Cali after last night. And if you don’t believe us, here’s a little sample:
