How the heck did this happen?
Two German artist are claiming responsibility for the American flag swap on top of the Brooklyn bridge in July. As stated on their website, “In the night from July 21st to July 22nd Wermke/Leinkauf hoisted two hand-sewn white American flags on the towers of Brooklyn Bridge.”
The two artist who goes by the name of Mischa Leinkauf and Matthias Wermke also sent to the New York Times photo and video evidence of their work.
Their reason?
Via The NY Times:
“We saw the bridge, which was designed by a German, trained in Berlin, who came to America because it was the place to fulfill his dreams, as the most beautiful expression of a great public space,” Mr. Leinkauf said. “That beauty was what we were trying to capture.”

The artist also stated that the “project” took place between 3am and 5am. They carried the flags in backpacks and used the climbing cables that police and construction workers use to get to the top of the bridge.
