Bed-Stuy born teen brothers, Rusty (17) and River Fields (15) are raising funds in hopes of taking 40 inner city high school students to Harvard University to participate in the Harvard Mock Trial High School Seminar Program this weekend — November 12-13.
After participating in the Harvard Mock Trial Seminar back in October, they were both inspired by their experience that they came back to Brooklyn in hopes of bringing other students to Harvard.
“The program puts our students in an environment that they have probably never been in before. Students attending Harvard Univeristy are on a track to become tomorrow’s leaders,” the Fields brothers state on their campaign page. “The students we are taking might not go to Harvard; they might not even want to go to Harvard, but the expereince opens them up to a new world of possibilities.”

The two are aggressively fundraising in hopes of raising the $15,000 needed to make this project a reality. The funds would help the brother’s non-profit — Rusty & River Fields Foundation — cover the costs of the Harvard Mock Trial program, transportation from Brooklyn to Cambridge, MA and back, and hotel accommodations in Cambridge.
During weekend seminar, high school students will have the opportunity to learn from some of the best collegiate mock trial competitors in the nation, begin to develop their skills in mock trial, participate in a student-led college tour of Harvard’s campus and engage in a Q&A college panel with Harvard freshmen. The mock trial provides training in critical thinking, public speaking, and civic lessons through an introduction to the justice system.
“Due to a lack of both exposure and financial resources, some would never get the opportunity to participate in programs like these,” they said.
The teens, to date have raised a little over $5K of their $15K goal. To donate and learn more information click here.
