Saturday, November 18th, On Stage at Kingsborough presented, “Two’s Company: Broadway’s Great Duets,” A Merkin Concert Hall’s Broadway Close Up Presentation. The 1st of a Cabaret Series, celebrated the work of several brilliant composers from Irving Berlin to Stephen Sondheim to Leonard Bernstein to Cole Porter from Rodgers and Hammerstein to Cy Coleman. Directed by Tony Nominee Marcia Milgrom and Musical Direction by Greg Jarrett, “Two’s Company” is musically delightful and educationally inspiring.

Anna Becker, Executive Director, welcomed attendees, gave upcoming event details, and introduced the host for the evening’s entertainment, Sean Hartley. Hartley who is director of Theater@Kaufman and often hosts Broadway Close Up and Broadway Playhouse, lead the audience on a magical musical journey spanning almost one hundred years.

“You don’t think about duets – you think about the big products, but the duet brings stars together,” said Hartley.

Before each powerful performance, Hartley gave valuable background information on the different duet styles, culture and time periods, and specific Broadway Shows. The production explored the great duets from Broadway hits like Camelot, The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Falsettos, Hamilton, and more. Farrah Alvin (NINE), Lora Lee Gayer (FOLLIES), Jason Gotay (SPIDERMAN TURN OFF THE DARK), Tony Nominee John Herrera (THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD), Jeff Kready (LES MISERABLES), Kevin Massey (A GENTLEMEN’S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER), Gabrielle Stavelli, and Sally Wilfert (ASSASSINS) brought their best to Brooklyn’s Kingsborough stage.

The evening’s highlight however, included John Herrera (who after that show celebrated retirement) and Jason Gotay singing Dear Theodosia, from the highly acclaimed musical, Hamilton. A sung and rapped musical about America’s Founding Father, Dear Theodosia was originally sung by Leslie Odom, Jr. (Aaron Burr) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Alexander Hamilton).

Gotay as Aaron Burr sweetly sang about his daughter — “Dear Theodosia, what to say to you? You have my eyes, you have your mother’s name.” The arch rivals are cleverly brought together as they sing about their beloved children. Herrera as Hamilton masterfully sang — “Oh Philip, when you smile, I am undone, my son. Look at my son, pride is not the word I’m looking for.” The captivated audience experienced every heartfelt note.
