While Forbes has their “Top 100 Most Powerful Women” and the New York Daily News Have their “Top 50 Most Powerful Women In New York“, I feel it’s only right for OurBKSocial to have its own list. Brooklyn has birthed and raised some pretty powerful women. Why not acknowledge them? Here are a list of 7Â women either born or raised in Brooklyn that I have generated to be part of the “7 Most Powerful Women Of Brooklyn”.
1. Barbra Streisand
Born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 1942, the 72 year old is a singer-songwriter, author, actress, film producer and director. She has gone on to win two Academy Awards, eight Grammy Awards, five Emmy Awards, a Special Tony Award, an American Film Institute Award and so many others. She is also amongst the only twelve entertainers who have one an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award.
2.  Rosie Perez
Born in Bushwick, Brooklyn in 1964, the 49 year old is an actress, dancer, choreographer, director, author and activist. The start of Perez’s career was in 1988 when she was hired by Brooklyn’s own Spike Lee to act in her first movie role, “Do The Right Thing”. She has also choreographed music videos for artist like Janet Jackson, Bobby Brown, Diana Ross, LL Cool J and even The Fly Girls from FOX television’s oldie but goodie, “In Living Color”.
3. Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1933, the 81 year old previously graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY with a BA in Government. She then went on to attend Harvard Law School where she was only one of nine women in a class of around 500 students. She then transferred to Columbia Law School after following her husband’s new job in NY and became the first woman to be in two major law reviews, the Harvard Law Review and the Columbia Law Review. In her later career, former President Bill Clinton appointed her as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
4. Joan Rivers
Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1933, the 81 year old is an actress, producer, writer, comedian and television host. Rivers has gone on to have a quite successful career. She hosted shows like The Tonight Show, The Late Show, The Joan Rivers Show and most recently Fashion Police and Joan & Melissa. She has previously won a Daytime Emmy for The Joan Rivers Show and a Grammy for Best Comedy Album for What Becomes A Semi-Legend Most.

5. Rosanna Scotto
Born in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn in 1958, the 56 year old is an American television journalist and news anchor. She currently co-anchors Good Day New York with Greg Kelly. She has been noted as the lead female news anchor since 1990 according to MyFoxNY.
6. Judge Judy
Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1942, the 71 year old is an American lawyer, judge, television personality and author. In 1982 Mayor Ed Koch appointed her as a judge, first in criminal court then later as Manhattan’s supervising family court judge in 1986. It has been reported back in October 2013 that Judge Judy is still the highest paid TV star, earning $47 million per year for her court series.
7. Stephanie Mills
Born in Queens in 1957 but raised in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, the 57 year old is an R&B, soul, gospel singer and a Broadway star. Mills’ career exploded when she portrayed Dorothy in the African-American adaptation of the Wizard of Oz entitled the Wiz. She was also know for dating her fellow co-star, Michael Jackson around that period. Mills has won a Grammy Award and an American Music Award for he prior musical work.
