On June 16th, 1884 the roller-coaster known as the Switchback Railway was born of designer LeMarcus Thompson. The ride went at a speed of six miles per hour and coast only a nickel to ride. Also yesterday, Coney Island opened it’s doors to their new coaster, the “Thunderbolt”. The new attraction, which sits on the same lot by the Boardwalk as the original Thunderbolt, starts with a terrifying 90 degree drop from 115 feet in the air. The coaster goes up to 55 miles per hour and spans 2,233 feet of track.
