The plea for Brooklyn to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention has officially become historical. Wife of the late Jackie Robinson, 92, has told the Daily News exclusively that she has joined the campaign fight to get the DNC to New York.
“New York and Brooklyn both are very special places in my heart. Jack and I had wonderful experiences in both places,” Robinson told the Daily News. “When Jack joined the Brooklyn Dodgers and [team President Branch] Rickey brought him in as the first African-American to be a member of the Major League, that began a series of experiences — very negative and very challenging and very hurtful in some ways,” she reminisced. The 92-year-old also spoke on the evolution of Brooklyn. “Brooklyn has been in the forefront of some of the changes we’re looking to see in the society,” said Robinson.
Brooklyn has always been the borough for change as Jackie Robinson was the first black Major League Baseball player for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson, not only broke color barriers for the sport, but quickly became the league legend. Having the DNC in Brooklyn would mean so much to the borough and Rachel Robinson reiterates that. “The general feeling in Brooklyn will be that people will be proud to have the convention there.”
