Former Brooklyn Nets center and first openly gay NBA player, Jason Collins, will retire tonight at Barclays Center. The news of his retirement came through Sports Illustrated; the same company who Collins reported to being gay this past February before signing with the Brooklyn Nets.

Collins made his Brooklyn Nets road debut on February 23rd 2014 when the Nets took on the Lakers. Collins then made his Brooklyn Nets home debut on March 3rd 2014 against the Bulls. In both games he walked onto the court to standing ovations and walked off in victory.

Media attention had increased on Brooklyn, primarily because of Collins. Collins talked about not living in the shadows and not living a lie anymore for the rest of his life but more importantly, he just wanted to play the sport he loved.

In his 4 months as a Brooklyn Net, Collins experienced other players taking shots at him on the court for being gay. Collins however, has refrained from putting their names out. He also wore two different jerseys in numbers 46 and 98. He wore #46 simply because #98 wasn’t available in time. He then wore #98 in honor of Matthew Shepard, a student was beaten and murdered in an antigay hate crime in 1998. At one point in those 4 months, Jason Collins was the highest selling jersey on NBAStore.com.

Tonight, Jason Collins will proudly retire with no regrets, with a franchise he has played with for 8 seasons, with friends, family, fans, and has chosen to do so in Brooklyn.
