CROWN HEIGHTS — A Brooklyn woman was found dead at the bottom of a basement staircase inside her Crown Heights home after police were called when neighbors heard the cries of her two-year-old daughter.

Tonie Wells, 22, is believed to have been strangled by her 29-year-old husband, Barry Wells.

Wells, who was found dead shortly before 10am Wednesday morning, was found with bruising to the neck, and it appeared she may have been pushed down the stairs, police say.

Nearby neighbors heard an argument and something “falling down the stairs,” reports say.

According to the Daily News, Tonie had made a 911 call hours before she was found dead to report she was in fear of her husband, but the officers assigned to do a “wellness check” drove to the home but never got out of their cars.

Today, the officers identified as Wing Hong Lau and Wael Jaber, both 11-year veterans, have been suspended as an internal investigation is being conducted.

“It was him,” Tonie’s sister told the Daily News referring to Tonie’s husband. “It wasn’t an accident. It was definitely him.”

“If what my niece went through can shine light on someone else’s (struggle) to get someone else to run, to save a life. If my niece’s memory can do that, then we will do what we can do to help someone else,” Well’s aunt Katherine Rivera, 46, told the Daily News.
