Classic Film "Do The Right Thing" Still On Trend 26 Years Later

Today marks the 26th Anniversary of one of Spike Lee’s greatest films, Do The Right Thing.

If you’re from Brooklyn and never seen  then chances are you couldn’t be a real Brooklynite. The movie directed by Lee, featured the late Ruby Dee, Samuel L. Jackson Danny Aiello, and Martin Lawrence, just to name a few. The film based in Bedford Stuyvesant, touches on numerous topics: classism, sexism, police brutality, and specifically racial tension.  Although the film was released in 1989, subjects addressed in the movie are still present-day issues now in 2015.

Do The Right Thing is ranked as one of the greatest films of all time and can arguably be listed as one of the “classics”. Scratch that, no question, IT IS A CLASSIC! It’s only right that a film of that caliber receive the honor of having it’s own celebrated day. Last year, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams deemed June 30th “Do The Right Thing Day“.

And because the fashion was so epic in the movie, I’ve compiled a list of trends from the film that have re-emerged in 2015.

Throughout the entire movie, someone is sporting one. There is a scene when Mookie (Spike Lee’s character) arrives to work, and he is wearing a Brooklyn Dodgers Jackie Robinson #42 baseball jersey.

Most of the actors in the movie sported this look, if it wasn’t the high-top fade, then it was the jheri-curl.

Color Blocking

Samuel L. Jackson’s character owns this trend, as this can be noted even down to his accessories. He rocked leopard rimmed sunnies, Hawaiian shirts, and numerous colorful hats.

Crop Tops/High Waisted Pants

The character played by Rosie Perez is seen playing with this style all throughout the film.

26 years later and these “trends” are still surfacing, it just makes it that harder to purge your closet, as you are very likely to run the risk of seeing the same pieces you own now make a come back years from now.

(Fun fact about Do The Right Thing, our President and First Lady watched it on their first date. I wonder what they wore.)
