Back in 1846, before East Oakland was an official part of Oakland, it was its own separate city called Brooklyn. A little more than 200 Mormons boarded a ship in New York. The ship traveled past Cape Cod and Hawaii before landing in San Francisco, or previously known as Yerba Buena. Around 10 years after the ship settled, Brooklyn was formed by the joining of the two towns of Clinton and San Antonio. Although Brooklyn didn’t last long, Clinton and San Antonio remained the names as neighborhoods.

If you travel today to East Oakland, there are still some leftovers of the former city. Most specifically, Brooklyn Avenue, a long stretch of road in Cleveland Heights and Brooklyn Basin an area in Oakland know for its large real estate and commercial development.
