New Yorkers are constantly on their phones, talking, texting and taking pictures, leaving low battery percentages or having the device completely shut down with no charging stations in reach.

According to the NY Daily News, New York City has begun testing high-tech park benches that will grant residents access to recharge batteries to their cellular devices, and tablets.

Finally!

The new Soofa benches, developed out of the MIT Media Lab, are designed with a solar powered charging station in the middle of the bench, two ports on the front of each box and seats stretched out like wings. The stations will also keep track of how many New Yorkers visit the park through counting your Wi-Fi enabled devices, though they assure you that no personal information with be gained. With that data, the NYC Parks Department is hoping to use the data to increase optimal cleaning and event schedules for the various parks.  Approximately five of the benches are expected to be placed at Highbridge Parks in the Bronx and upper Manhattan.

“These Soofa benches will provide a look forward into the future of parks,” Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver told the Daily News.

The testing period is scheduled to last about two-years with no official word on when they expect to branch out to Brooklyn and Queens. But be sure if the pilot program does work out we’ll be getting them soon.

“We are super-excited about New York City,” said Sandra Richter, co-founder and CEO of Soofa. “People are staying outside longer and using parks as their backyards. The Soofa benches are a perfect fit.”
