This Sunday, June 12th, is the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City. It’s a day, whether you attend or not, to appreciate everything that is Puerto Rican!

I personally am ready for this weekend with my dancing shoes, thanks to Nieves Dance Studio in Williamsburg and tonight, June 7th at 6:30pm begins a new round of salsa classes.

Located on 670 Grand St, I attended my first Level One class about a month ago, thanks to this Groupon. Every Saturday for the month of May from 4-5:30pm, I attended class with 18 or so beginners and we learned Salsa on 2, which is most familiar with New York and Puerto Rico. You’ll learn basic steps and how to count and for the last part of the class you’ll learn partner work – which means cool turns and smooth styling to impress your friends at any social night!

I liked how unpretentious the school and class is for a neighborhood that has a growing reputation to some as being pretentious. It’s a down-to-earth school run by Wil Nieves, who also opened a Bronx location; the school opened just a few years ago. But believe you me, this school has the best on the block.

By attending the school, you also get a Rewards Card that allows you to have one punch per class and provides some cool perks like a Free Salsa Social and a Free Salsa CD. Salsa Socials are at the studio every Friday night from 9pm on, and allow you to dance freely for a $10 cover with people from other schools (and also, you can bring your own drinks!)

If you’re single, you’ll make friends and if you’re in a relationship, bring your partner! You’ll be J.Lo or the man to control J.Lo on the dance floor in no time!

Also, for those who might be attending another school already but want a fun event to go to, Nieves Latin Dance Studio is having their 4th Year Anniversary Party on Sunday, June 26th near Barclays at Roulette Theater on 509 Atlantic Avenue. Entry for $55 give you food, live music, an open bar, and showcases by Jerry Hernandez y la Orquesta Dee Jay.
