Jason Collins is now the first officially openly gay athlete in North America’s four major professional sports. Yesterday, the Brooklyn Nets welcomed Jason by him signing a 10 day contract and also playing in his first game back in the NBA against the Los Angeles Lakers. Jason entered the game during the second half, where the Nets won (108-102), and received an amazing standing ovation from the Staples Center (home of the Los Angeles Lakers).

Although not wearing it yesterday, Jason will wear the number 98 jersey which honors  Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student who died in a notorious anti-gay hate crime in 1998. Collins wore that number previously with both the Celtics and the Wizards. Collins last game in the NBA was with the Washington Wizards in April of 2013.

Jason told ESPN yesterday during his first press conference as a Net,

Life is so much better for me. I don’t have to hide who I am. Just be my normal self. The past 10 months have been incredible. A lot of really cool experiences, learning a lot, making new friends and hearing peoples’ stories. Overall, it’s been really positive.

Why only 10 days? Coach, Jason Kidd stressed it was about winning more games, helping out the front court and receiving a better play-off standing. And if we know anything about Coach Kidd, he wants to win!

Congrats Jason, Welcome to Brooklyn!
