A recent outbreak of hepatitis A virus (HAV) has infected 46 men who live in New York City, the Health Department said on Friday.

The affected patient are mostly men who had sex  or sexual contact with other men between Jan. 2 and Aug. 31, according to the Daily News who first reported on the outbreak.

The majority of the patients, ages 19 to 55, have not traveled to places where hepatitis A is present. Of the 46 New York City residents recently infected with HAV, 36 where men who have sex with men and one woman with a history of sexual contact with a bisexual man.

The preventable disease can spread from an infected person to a non-infected person when the stool of the former is transferred during sex. It can also be carried on an infected person’s hands and spread through direct and in-direct c, such as eating food or drinking water handled by an infected person.

The Department of Health is currently asking that men who have regular sexual contact with other men to be vaccinated against hepatitis A.
