Williams, All-Star point guard of the Brooklyn Nets, was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia to Denise Smith. He watched his mother work two jobs to take care of he and his brother Kendal. At the height of his career he was determined to give back to the community.

Seven years ago this June, Deron and wife Amy founded the Point Of Hope Foundation with the vision of improving the life of children. One of the organization’s first events was a Christmas Dinner for single mothers and their children in Salt Lake City.

“I knew how difficult it was around Christmastime for her to provide for me and my little brother and still help us have a good Christmas. That’s what this is about,” said Deron.

Since the inception of his foundation Williams has expanded the vision.  In 2008, the first Illini Hoop Legends Charity Event was held in Chicago.  In 2009, In the Point of Hope foundation donated 1,400 school supply kits to Edison Elementary and Whittier Elementary in Salt Lake City, UT.  In 2010, Deron, Amy and other Point of Hope volunteers served over 4,500 meals to needy families.  In 2011, Deron and Kyle Korver teamed up again for his 3rd Annual Dodge Barrage tournament, traveling all over the country to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Midvale, UT. In 2012, the Williams family presented a check for $10,000 from the Point of Hope foundation to Food Bank for New York. In 2013, Deron was nominated for the Kia Community Assist Award for his work in Brooklyn. In 2014, Point of Hope, teamed up with Autism Speaks to pay tribute to autism awareness month at Barclays Center. He has taken a special interest in this project. Deron’s own son DJ has been diagnosed with autism.

“This is my favorite event and I think it’s a great one. It’s pretty affordable for everybody and it’s a great way to raise money. There are so many different causes and diseases and there are many people who have problems. The Point of Hope Foundation is just about helping people, and kids, especially. I’m blessed to be able to give back,” said Deron Williams.
