Brooklyn Nets Have Waived Earl Clark

Earlier today the Brooklyn Nets waived Earl Clark from the team bringing the roster down to 16.

Nets fans, you all should have seen this coming a mile away because Earl Clark certainly did. Clark told the Nets that he wanted to be waived to move onto other basketball ventures, possibly overseas. Last season Clark didn’t play well for Brooklyn as the team tip-toed into the playoffs. And as for the Summer League? He commanded the ball and had the offense run though him at times. The only problem was that he missed too many shots and eventually found himself on the outside looking in. Clark had to have seen the writing on the wall. He did not have a guaranteed contract and could’ve been waived at anytime.

The Nets also traded away point guard Steve blake for Quincy Miller, a guy that plays a the same position a Clark and is 5 years younger. Clark is 27 and Miller is 22. Add to the fact that the Nets need point guard help and Clark is not a point guard. The Nets were looking for players to stand out and step up in the summer league and those players that did were not named Earl Clark. Clark asking to be waived is probably the best option for him at this time and will probably resume his basketball career in China where he’s done really well.

With Earl Clark waived, the roster now stands at 16. For pre-season training camps and pre-season games, teams are allowed to have no more than 20 players on the roster but must cut the rosters down to 15 by Oct 27th. Players with guaranteed contracts are safe but those with non-gaurenteed need to produce in the pre-season summer camp to secure a spot on the team.

The Nets currently have 4 players with non-guarenteed contracts: Markel Brown, Willie Reed, Quincy Miller, and Ryan Boatright. Brown played outstanding in the summer league. Anyone that watch can tell that he’s going to be a rotation player this season.  There is the small but quick and efficient Ryan Boatright. Boatright really shinned before he was taken out of the tournament due to a minor injury. The Nets picked up Willie Reed from the Miami Heat and he had produced as well. And then there was one, Quincy Miller. Miller is my pick to be the player who will be cut. The Nets want to see what he can do before making a decision because he is a decent player. However, its hard to paint a picture that foresees the Nets, who really need point guard help, to pick Miller over Boatright. Nets fans will have plenty of time to speculate the final roster before Oct 27th rolls around.
