What does it take to be an NBA Final’s Official? It takes passion, drive, love of the game, skills and Brooklyn! Ok, being from Brooklyn is not necessarily part of the deal, but I do believe it helps. Zach Zarba (39), a veteran NBA Official from Brooklyn, officiates his first finals game after working in the NBA for nearly 11 years.

Zarba, who lives about 6 minutes away from Barclay’s Center, usually walks to work. This time he was one of the 12 officials picked from a pool of 60 to work one of the NBA Finals games. He was chosen to Game 3 of the finals which was played in Miami. For this special occasion he flew in his wife, dad, younger brother, two of his close friend and one of his long time mentors from Brooklyn. Four of those tickets he had to purchase himself but he didn’t mind. It’s his first time working the finals, so this one was special.

Zach Zarba told the NYDN

“It’s a big deal. For officials, it’s a huge accomplishment, and it’s a humbling feeling to be chosen.”

That particular game ended in a 111-92  huge win for the Spurs. He was excited that this game managed to go smoothly with no real controversy.

Yesterday the Spurs became the 2014 NBA Champions in five games (4-1) with a score of 104-87.

Congrats to Zach Zarba and to the San Antonio Spurs!
