As MLB spring training gets underway, it marks the best time of year for many baseball fans. There’s a whole season ahead to enjoy, and the possibilities are endless and exciting. The Brooklyn Cyclones, the Mets’ Short Season A affiliate, may not have spring training, but they are gearing up for the 2018 season nonetheless.

Their long and varied history began in St. Catharines, Ontario in 1986. Initially affiliated with the Toronto Blue Jays, the team started out as the St. Catharines Blue Jays. They remained in St. Catharines until 2000, when then New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani announced a deal that would bring two minor league baseball teams to the boroughs outside Manhattan. The Staten Island Yankees and the Queens Kings (now the Cyclones) would require new stadiums to play in. In the interim, the Kings played their inaugural season at St. Johns University in 2000.

In 2001, the team’s ballpark was ready and they made the move to Brooklyn. Brooklyn hadn’t had a baseball team since the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles. The team was so popular in their first season that they had to add additional seating to the new stadium after just three weeks of play.

To come up with a name, the team held a naming contest before the season. The Cyclones name won the contest, referring to the famous Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster. During that same 2001 season, the Cyclones battled their way to the NY Penn-League championship, where they faced the Williamsport Crosscutters. After winning the first game in the best two out of three series, the teams were scheduled to play in Brooklyn on September 11, 2001. After the horrible events of that day, all minor league baseball playoffs were canceled, and the teams were named co-champions.

While the team has won four division titles since then, they have not made it back to the league championship. The past five years, they’ve missed the playoffs altogether. They’re looking to turn things around this coming season.

Despite the team’s struggles, the team and their fans continue to have fun. In 2015, the Cyclones honored TV show Saved by the Bell with special jerseys and a host of events like “A.C. Slater’s Sitting Backwards Musical Chairs” and “Screech Powers Chess Tournament” in MCU Park’s concourse. The following year, they celebrated Ren and Stimpy by wearing Stimpy jerseys while their opponent sported Ren jerseys. Just last year, they became the Brooklyn Slices for one game to commemorate Brooklyn’s delicious pizza. They even created a new logo for the game, and gave out delivery driver-style hats to the first 2,000 fans to show up that night.

With advance tickets available for as cheap as $1o and zany events throughout the season, Cyclones games are a great way to spend an afternoon in the sun.
